Alcohol is a perfect example of a substance that can bring enjoyment, connection, and relaxation when used in moderation — but can also become destructive when overused. At Kurb, our goal is to create an environment where substances like alcohol can add value to your life, rather than detract from it. We aim to support mindful, controlled use — not forced abstinence.

We recognize that alcohol is the most commonly abused substance in America, and that every person’s relationship with drinking is different. While Kurb is not intended to treat alcohol addiction or support severe cases of dependency, it can help moderate users build healthier habits by following a structured usage schedule.

Currently, only the Kurb Home is designed to store medium-sized liquor bottles. Larger containers — including boxed wine, beer, or oversized handles — may not fit within the device. We're actively working on future solutions that better support alcohol moderation across all use cases.
Alcohol and Kurb

Kurb may also be helpful for individuals who are trying to reduce their use of certain prescription medications — especially when those medications are being taken more frequently than prescribed, or outside of medical necessity.

We’ve heard from users who struggle with substances like sleep aids, ADHD medications, anti-anxiety pills, or low-dose opioids. These are often legally prescribed, yet can still lead to patterns of dependence or psychological reliance. For some, the habit becomes more about the ritual or the perceived need to “feel normal” — even when the medication is no longer clinically necessary.

Kurb can provide structure, accountability, and intentionality in these cases by limiting when and how often the pills are accessible. For example:
-
Setting schedules to avoid impulsive use during stressful moments
-
Encouraging breaks and reducing frequency in a controlled, step-down fashion
-
Offering a sense of control when tapering off with guidance from a healthcare provider
While we don’t recommend using Kurb to manage essential medications or anything life-sustaining, it may be a helpful support tool for those trying to regain autonomy over non-essential or recreational medication use.
As with all cases involving prescription substances, we encourage anyone using Kurb in this way to do so with support from a medical professional.
